for those who dunno how it works:
there's probably more than 10 indoor/outdoor venues in one place filled with its stage, sound system and all in each room. jazz players (local and around the world) come together and play for 3 nights (each day with different singers or group), but i only went for one day.
so it's my first nite doing this whole-night-dedicated-to-jazz thing
and here's the recap with some blurry and distant pics
due to the usual late-ness of jakarta peeps, we arrived at PRJ (the venue this yr) rather late..probably around 8pm, while the concert actually already started at 6.
we're there planned to see a few, and end up seeing quite a bunch of artists.
first off, local singers called panji sth. i dunno these people, never heard of them, but we saw it anyway coz my siz's friend said they're pretty good. but as soon as my siz n i get bored, we jump off to another venue.
it's The Groove!! ahh...such a nostalgic songs they played. remind me of my childhood where cable tv didn't exist and my life revolve around woke up-school-sleep routine. they were groovy and fun! i like this group, with it's long legged guy and eccentric lady, and moreover they surely can sing.
who is this guy? i think he's supposed to be in a group. but he's alone that night. ahh...it's sondre lerche...hope i pronounce it right. i don't think he's from my era..my siz said he's famous years ago. she went to his concert 3 yrs ago, and he still sang the same songs that night. he's quite wanted that night and the room were super packed. there for 10mins then ran away before i'm flat to the ground.
apart from all the contemporary jazz (or not jazz at all) venues that we went, this is the real Jazz. it's Roy Hargrove Quintet. thank goodness people decided to sit on the floor and just enjoy the show. some of us even started to doze off after a while. we were there to see Barry Likumahuwa, but he arrived late and we supposed to go to other venue, so...no Barry.
THE STAR OF THE NIGHT: Corrine Bailey Rae. she's such a sunshine. awesome live singer too (for me, singer is all about how u perform live, not how u sound in ur recording cds or mv). tho i was standing farrrr way back (outside-the-exit-door-far), can still hear her loud and clear. and when she sang, she just bring joy to the place with her voice. just A.W.E.S.O.M.E
that's the last show of the night, so then we head home.
the clock strike 1.30am and we need our sleep.
Xx
Lo
